Twitter has been dealing with its abuse problem for a very long time. It was even said that the prevalence of racists, misogynists, and trolls was what caused Disney to give up on its plan to acquire the microblogging network. The company recently promised to do more to counter rampant abuse and today it has announced the launch of a new set of features aimed at preventing just that.
The “mute” feature has long been available to Twitter users, it lets them mute accounts they don’t want to see tweets from. This feature is now being expanded to notifications. Users will now be able to mute phrases, keywords, and even entire conversations.
It’s also making it easier for users to report conduct that targets people on the basis of race, gender, national origin, ethnicity, religious affiliation, age, disability, disease, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Users will now have a more direct way of reporting this type of conduct for themselves and for others, whenever they see it happening. Twitter says that this is going to improve its ability to process these reports and take action when necessary.
Twitter also confirmed today that it has retrained all of its support teams on its policies, it has conducted special sessions on cultural and historical contextualization of hate conduct and has also implemented an ongoing refresher program. It has improved internal tools and systems to deal more effectively with hateful conduct.
