xbox one sNow the Xbox One S supports Blu-ray, which we guess was pretty obvious given that physical media does come in the Blu-ray format. However for those of you who plan to use your Xbox One S for more than just gaming, you’ll be pleased to learn that BD-R and BD-RE support will be coming to the console today.

This is according to a tweet from yesterday by Microsoft’s Mike Ybarra who wrote, “For those asking… yes, Xbox One S will support BD-R and BD-RE. App update should happen today. #Xbox” For those wondering what BD-R and BD-RE stand for, basically it means Blu-ray recordable and Blu-ray recordable erasable respectively.

These are Blu-ray discs that people can record things on, like home made movies, personal storage for video files, photos, documents, and so on. By making the Xbox One S support these formats of Blu-ray, it will allow gamers to do more with their console than just play video games. However given that many people already use their smartphones for recording and storage, we’re not sure how many users will actually take advantage of the feature, but we guess at least it is there should they choose to use it.

Microsoft has been marketing the Xbox One S as one of the cheapest 4K Blu-ray players, so hopefully this update will make it more appealing. The update is expected to begin rolling out later today.
