According to a new report, Amazon is developing a new app to increase its presence in the $800 billion trucking industry. The app will reportedly match truck drivers with shippers. Amazon is said to launch this app in the summer next year. It will enable truck drivers to easily find shippers that need to have their goods hauled across the country.

Citing a person with direct knowledge of the matter, Business Insider reports that the app will function in a similar fashion to how Uber connects riders with drivers. Shippers will find it very easy to use the app to locate truck drivers that can haul their goods.

The app would also eliminate the need for brokers that normally charge commissions of up to 15 percent for connecting shippers with truck drivers. Users will be able to view real-time pricing in the app which will also display driving directions. Personalized features including truck-stop recommendations will be offered in the app as well.

Amazon hasn’t officially commented on this report as yet but it goes to show the company’s ambitions of becoming a proper logistics company which controls the entire delivery cycle from start to finish. In just over a year the company has acquired countless trailer trucks and cargo planes to speed up delivery of packages to the end customer.
