iphone-7-bottomOne of the rumored features of 2017’s iPhone is that Apple will finally be adopting AMOLED displays. Given how many iPhones Apple typically sells, it seems that quite a few smartphone makers over in China are worried that this could end up with Apple hogging all the displays for themselves, like they did with the fingerprint scanners.

So much that according to a report from DigiTimes (via AppleInsider) that cites local Chinese media, a bunch of Chinese smartphone OEMs have formed a consortium and will be working with panel maker Royole on the production of AMOLED screens. This consortium is said to consist of Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, and BBK.

It seems that the worry for Apple’s iPhones aren’t for their 2017 release, but what will happen later in 2018-2020 where they expect that persistent demand for AMOLED displays will result in component shortages for other smartphone makers. Last we heard, Apple is said to be sourcing their AMOLEDs from Samsung, so unless those OEMs are getting theirs from Samsung as well, we’re not sure if there is really anything to be worried about.

The move to AMOLED has been rumored about for a while now. Some rumors claim that this will only happen in 2018, while some say that it could happen next year. Either way it is inevitable but until we see it for ourselves, take it with a grain of salt for now.
