You can never be too careful when it comes to personal safety. You might want to keep someone in the loop if you’re making your way back home by walking down a deserted street or if you’re just going hiking for a few hours. There are countless apps and services that let you do that but now Google is throwing its hat in the ring with a new app called Trusted Contacts. It puts emphasis on personal safety will enabling users to share their location with loved ones whenever they want, even if their phone is offline or they can’t get to it.

Trusted Contacts is only available for Android right now. Once installed, it can be used to assign “trusted” status to family and friends. Only trusted contacts will be able to see their activity status – whether the user is online or if they have moved around recently – and can thus know at a glance if they’re doing okay.

Trusted contacts will also be able to request users’ locations if they’re worried about them. Users have the option to deny the request if they want, however, if they’re unable to respond within “a reasonable timeframe,” their location is shared automatically with the contacts.

Google has released the Trusted Contacts app and it’s now available as a free download from the Google Play Store.
