lg-sign-new
If a new report out of Korea is to be believed, LG has teamed up with some of the biggest tech companies on the planet for foldable OLED displays. The report mentions that LG Display has signed Apple, Google, and Microsoft as its first customers for foldable OLED displays that it’s planning to mass produce in 2018.

The report adds that LG Display has developed a prototype of an “out-foldable” panel. This display technology is likely going to make its way to smartphones and hybrid devices that double as both smartphones and tablets in the future. The very nature of a foldable OLED panel will enable manufacturers to build such hybrid devices so there’s no reason to believe that such devices can’t be a reality in the future.

No further details about the foldable OLED display are mentioned in the report, but it does point out that the LG group’s own LG Electronics signed on to this partnership as a buyer quite late, even though it’s an associated company of LG Display.

Companies like Apple have filed for multiple patents related to foldable devices but obviously they’ve yet to bring such a device to market. Display technology will play a major part in making these devices a reality. Samsung is actually expected to be the first major manufacturer to come out with a device that has a foldable OLED display, it may launch this device at some point next year if rumors and reports are believed.
