HTC has been churning out new devices every year but the company’s fortunes are yet to turn. HTC recently confirmed that it’s going to conduct a product unveil on January 12th, 2017. It hasn’t said what devices will be unveiled at the event so we could be treated to new smartphones or a VR headset for smartphones. If it’s a new flagship smartphone, perhaps it might not make its way to the United States, that’s what an analyst is predicting.

Analyst Cliff Maldonado of BayStreet Research, a handset research firm, predicts that if HTC unveils a new flagship smartphone on January 12th, chances are the company might not launch it in the U.S. The analyst is of the view that HTC simply does not have enough resources to launch a flagship smartphone in the United States.

Aside from the claim that HTC may not have enough resources to launch a flagship smartphone across major mobile networks in the country, the analyst points out that the company has been going through a tough restructuring process and that it has laid off most of its field sales team.

He expects HTC to stick with its handset business but switch to an ODM model. The Original Design Manufacturer model will see HTC designing and manufacturing smartphones that might be sold with another company’s branding.

Whether that’s what’s HTC is going to do remains to be seen. The company hasn’t commented on this analyst’s predictions just yet and hopefully there will be more clarity about this come January 12th.
