minecraft-xboxoneeditionIt’s safe to say that no one really thought Minecraft would be this huge cultural hit that it is today, where it has even spread its influence into the education sector. It’s definitely not the first building type of game in existence, but for some reason it has proven to be quite a smash hit, leading Microsoft to acquire the company behind it.

However what Minecraft has also proven to be is something of a point of regret at Nintendo, or at least that’s the impression that Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto seemed to leave during an interview with Glixel. In the interview when asked about what other games he plays, Miyamoto revealed that Minecraft is a game that he really likes.

According to Miyamoto, “I do like Minecraft, but really more from the perspective of the fact that I really feel like that’s something we should have made. We had actually done a lot of experiments that were similar to that back in the N64 days and we had some designs that were very similar. It’s really impressive to me to see how they’ve been able to take that idea and turn it into a product.”

Given some of the level designs for Mario back in the day, we guess we could have pictured the company creating something similar. However we guess that’s that, but what do you guys think? Would Nintendo’s version of Minecraft have received similar acclaim had they released it back then?
