nintendo_switch_gamingWhen the Nintendo Switch’s reveal trailer was launched, we saw that Bethesda’s Skyrim could be one of the games that would be released for the console. Granted Skyrim is a relatively old game that debuted on last-gen consoles, but it recently got a remaster so with the updated graphics, it breathes new life into the device.

However if you are hoping for current-gen games to be ported onto the Switch, you might be disappointed to learn that might not necessarily happen. In a post on the Beyond3D forum (via GameRant), former senior rendering artist at Ubisoft Sebastian Aaltonen revealed that the console’s processing speed might not be good enough for current-gen ports.

He writes, “Around 50% of modern game engine frame time goes to running compute shaders… 25.6 GB/s is pretty low as everybody knows that 68 GB/s of Xbox One isn’t that great either… Switch certainly fares well against last gen consoles… Too bad last gen consoles already got their last big AAA releases year ago. Xbox One is a significantly faster hardware. Straightforward code port is not possible. Content also needs to be simplified.”

That being said none of this can be confirmed yet, although a recent series of leaks posted onto YouTube seemed to suggest that upcoming titles like Mass Effect: Andromeda and Red Dead Redemption 2 would be arrive for the Switch precisely because of those reasons. In any case take it with a grain of salt, but in a couple of weeks Nintendo should have the details for us.
