Pretty much all of the smartwatches we’ve seen have its “smarts” built into the main watch itself. This means that as far as the design of the watch is concerned, you’re pretty much stuck with what you’ve got, which isn’t ideal because sometimes you might need a different watch for different occasions.

However there seems to be an Indiegogo project launched for a watch called Origin. This is a mechanical smartwatch in which the “smart” portion of the watch is actually in the strap itself. This means you get to keep the look of a traditional watch while having access to smartwatch-like features, like phone notifications, activity tracking, and more.

Users will also be able to control their music from the watch, reject phone calls, and even locate their smartphones. There will be an accompanying app that will give users access to all these features, as well as to check on their own stats. Unfortunately the watch and strap will not be sold separately, but as The Verge notes, there does not seem to be anything that would prevent you from attaching it to another watch that can fit a 20mm wide band.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, then you’ll want to hit up its Indiegogo page for the details and to pledge your support where the early bird special will set you back $199.
