overwatch heroesIt is safe to say that Blizzard and their fans were probably a bit nervous when it came to launching Overwatch. After all the game represented a brand new franchise for the company which did not have years of past titles to help sell it or back it up. All it had was a pretty kick-ass cinematic trailer and Blizzard’s reputation.

Turns out that was enough as Overwatch has been met with huge success, which means that Blizzard can breathe a sigh of relief. To help cement the fact that Overwatch is a success, it seems that over at The Game Awards 2016, Overwatch was actually awarded the “Game of the Year”, beating out the likes of Doom, Inside, Titanfall 2, and Uncharted 4.

The game also won “Best Multiplayer Game”, “Best Esports Game”, and “Best Game Direction”. According to Blizzard’s Ray Gresko, “While we’ve been very happy with how the game has been received, we’re also extremely proud that this game and the world that we’re building has a message and it’s a message about heroism.”

He adds, “It’s a message about diversity. It’s a message about a bright and positive and hopeful future. And these are all things that we really believe everyone needs a little bit of right now.” What do you guys think? Do you agree that Overwatch deserves to have won “Game of the Year”?
