Nintendo is going to conduct a special event early next year to provide more details about its next-generation console but we continue to hear more about it via unofficial reports. The latest suggests that you will be able to play GameCube games on Nintendo Switch. It’s claimed that the Nintendo Switch is going to be the first console from the company to support GameCube games on its Virtual Console.

Citing several sources inside Nintendo, Eurogamer reports that the company has already been able to get classic games like Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Smash Bros. Melee running on the next-generation console.

It’s also claimed in the report that Nintendo is working on Animal Crossing for the Virtual Console, it was a very popular lifestyle simulator title for the GameCube. Nintendo will apparently make the console compatible with its Wii U GameCube controller adapter.

Nintendo’s European Research Department has reportedly developed the GameCube emulator for the Nintendo Switch. It’s the same team that created the NES Classic, a mini-console that has proven to be an instant hit.

The report mentions that users won’t be able to transfer their old Virtual Console purchases over to the Switch, they will be required to pay a nominal upgrade fee to unlock the titles on the next-generation console.

Bear in mind that none of this has been officially confirmed by Nintendo yet so take this with a grain of salt for now until there’s more evidence to support this theory.
