postalIf you thought that the violence from Grand Theft Auto series was bad, you clearly have not played Postal, which we reckon could have easily become the posterchild in the debate about v video game violence. The game is pretty old, but it seems that its developers at Running With Scissors wants to give it a new lease on life by making it open source.

In an announcement on its website, “It’s definitely been a wild ride for us all, and POSTAL means a lot to us – it’s our baby… But now we’re ready to hand the future of ‘the little shooter that could’ to the public at large. People have been asking, and we have been promising this for years now, but today we are proud to announce that the source code for POSTAL is officially released to the public on Bitbucket, under the GPL2 license.”

Basically what this means is that if you think you could improve upon the game, or maybe you want to use the game as a base for your own game, you will be able to. Of course you could take away from Postal what made it famous (or infamous) in the first place, which is the violence, but it will be interesting to see what the community can come up with.

In the meantime the developers seem particularly interested in having the community create a port for the Dreamcast. Apparently they’re not kidding.
