According to a new report, Apple might start manufacturing computers in the United States. However, the report mentions that these computers might not be the ones that it sells to the average customer. Apple is believed to be consolidating in-house server production at a single production facility in Mesa, Arizona. Some documents have been spotted which reveal that the company has applied for approval of designation as a “foreign trade zone.”

This suggests that Apple is interested in manufacturing and assembling its own server and data center machines. It’s not like this move wasn’t expected. A report last year revealed that Apple was gradually moving data center operations in-house as it wanted to increase the security of these products.

“Apple Inc has repurposed the site as a global data command center that will conduct high-tech manufacturing of finished data center cabinets for other data centers. The nature of the product is not for end users but for other global data centers that will be supported from the site,” the company’s filing states.

Whether or not Apple is going to take a similar step for products meant for average consumers remains to be seen. The company has often been criticized for building its popular products like the iPhone and MacBooks in China. While U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has often said that Apple should start making iPhones in the United States, that’s easier said than done.
