energousWireless charging as it stands isn’t truly 100% wireless. You are still required to place your device on a charging mat to charge, which means that in a way your device is still tethered. In fact wired charging might even be better as you can lift your phone up and it will continue to charge.

However Energous is expected to introduce “true” wireless charging later this year, according to a report from The Verge who spoke to the company’s CEO Steve Rizzone. Rizzone claims that the company’s wireless charging transmitters are expected to begin shipping by the end of 2017, which in turn has led to speculation that Apple’s 2017 iPhone could be taking advantage of the technology.

Back in December 2016, there were several rumors that suggested that one of Apple’s suppliers had teamed up with Energous. While the supplier isn’t exclusive to Apple, the bulk of their business comes from the Cupertino company which is how the connection was drawn. Now it seems that Rizzone has only added fuel to the fire by saying that Energous had signed a “key strategic partnership” with a company.

Naturally he would not dive into details, by Rizzone said that this partnership is with “one of the largest consumer electronic companies in the world. I cannot tell you who it is, but I can virtual guarantee that you have products from this company on your person, sitting on your desk, or at home.” We guess only time will tell if this partnership is with Apple, so until then try not to get your hopes up and take the rumors with a grain of salt.
