You might be aware that Google and Fiat Chrysler are working on self-driving minivans. The two companies are closely working together on self-driving car technology but today they’ve revealed that their work goes beyond that. The companies have unveiled a new in-car infotainment concept system today called Uconnect. The system will be an extension of Android into the car, no, not Android Auto. It would be powered by Android Nougat proper.
Uconnect is an 8.4 inch connected system that’s powered by Android. Google and Fiat Chrysler will demonstrate the new Uconnect system at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 later this week inside a Chrysler 300 sedan.
“This collaboration with Google has been an extremely beneficial opportunity for both companies to explore how in-vehicle infotainment and connectivity technology continues to evolve, and what it takes to meet consumers’ increasing desire for innovation of information with minimal distraction,” said Chris Barman, Fiat Chrysler’s head of electrical engineering.
Since it’s powered by Android 7.0 Nougat, the Uconnect system is built for connectivity and compatibility with the most popular Android applications. The demonstration will showcase integration with apps like Google Maps, Google Assistant, Pandora, Spotify, NPR One, and more.
“This collaboration with FCA brings together the industry standard for connected car systems with Android to create powerful infotainment systems designed for the digital age,” said Patrick Brady, Director of Android Engineering, Google.
The demonstration will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center for CES 2017 attendees only from January 5th to January 8th.
