Microsoft is reportedly going to lay off 700 employees in the coming week. These employees are said to be part of the group of 2,850 that Microsoft said it would be laying off in fiscal 2017. The cuts are said to impact different functions inside Microsoft, including sales, and come after the company reorganized and consolidated its sales and partner teams recently.

Microsoft quietly disclosed in a filing last year that it would be laying off 2,850 additional employees globally during fiscal 2017 ending June 30th, 2017. Microsoft previously revealed in May 2016 that it planned to cut 1,850 jobs.

It has gradually been implementing this plan by laying off employees in rounds. Business Insider reports that Microsoft is going to lay off 700 people in the week of January 22nd in its latest round of job cuts.

When you consider the total number of people that Microsoft employs globally, more than 113,000, 700 isn’t that big a number but employees are understandably concerned about across-the-board job cuts.

The upcoming layoffs are reportedly going to be spread across Microsoft’s worldwide offices and its different business groups which include human resources, sales, marketing, engineering, finance, and more. Microsoft is not laying off these employees to cut costs, its goal with this exercise is to update skills in different divisions.
