There’s a lot of hype these days surrounding Samsung’s next-generation flagship smartphones. The company is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus in the near future. We hear new stuff about the upcoming devices on a daily basis and while not all of it is going to be true, it does give us an idea of what to expect. The latest leak out of China brings us the purported model numbers of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus.

Samsung assigned model numbers SM-G930 and SM-G935 to the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge last year. Since these numbers normally move in a sequence, one would expect the new handsets to have SM-G940 and SM-G945 as its model numbers.

However, it’s unlikely to be the case, given that the number 4 is usually avoided in Chinese and Korean culture because of its similar pronunciation with the word “death.” It’s not uncommon for even buildings to not use the number 4 to mark the relevant floor, this is something they take very seriously in that part of the world.

So, this is why a source out of China is claiming that the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus will bear model numbers SM-G9500 and SM-G9550 respectively.

Expect to hear additional minor details about the upcoming flagships in the coming days. Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 at an event in April.
