Xiaomi only started making smartphones a few years ago and it has been able to make itself a big player in the smartphone market. It enjoys a significant market share in China as well as other emerging markets. However, Xiaomi is yet to officially launch its smartphones in the United States. While the company hasn’t really made a secret of its intention to start selling smartphones in the U.S., it looks like the company may not be doing that in 2017.

Xiaomi global vice president Hugo Barra has said that “we don’t have any specific-enough plans yet that we’re comfortable talking about yet,” which basically means that we should just keep waiting for the company to announce when it’s going to do that, but he doesn’t rule out the possibility completely by adding “eventually we’ll make our way over here.”

“We don’t want to go anywhere near the half-hearted efforts to launch a brand in the US just to say we’re in the US,” Barra said. Clearly, the company wants to do it in the right away whenever it decides to tackle the complex and competitive smartphone market of the United States where Apple and Samsung reign supreme.

Some of the new products that Xiaomi announced at CES 2017 this week might make their way to the United States at some point in the future, but Xiaomi only talked about their availability in China at the event in Las Vegas.
