The upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is probably one of the franchise’s most  beautiful title to date. You can tell that Nintendo really went all out when designing the game’s open world concept. However if you kind of miss the 2D-ish style Zelda games that are typically reserved for handhelds, you might be interested to learn that a 2D Zelda could find its way onto the Switch.

This is according to a recent interview with Game Informer where Zelda’s producer Eiji Aonuma hinted at the possibility of a 2D Zelda game eventually finding its way onto the Switch. When asked if the 3DS Zelda teams were working on a game for the Switch, Aonuma was quoted as saying, “Yes, there is definitely a possibility.”

He also goes on to add, “There are definitely good things about the 2D world and the playstyles of the 2D world. There are a lot of fans who enjoy that style. This Nintendo Switch style, which is the evolved style of gameplay is not necessarily… I want you to think of it more as an evolved style of 2D style. For the 3DS team, I am trying to make them think in a more evolved 2D-style approach.”

Of course this doesn’t necessarily guarantee anything since plans can change, but at least it sounds like Nintendo isn’t completely closed off to the idea, but what do you guys think? Does a 2D Zelda game on the Switch sound like it might be a “waste” of the console’s resources?
