Apple’s interest in expanding beyond just computers and smartphones isn’t new. Recently we have heard that Apple was interested in getting into entertainment by launching original shows and content for Apple Music. In fact Apple is already doing that with Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps.

However it seems that Apple’s interest in the entertainment sector might have gotten to the point where they might have even considered acquiring a production company. According to a report from the Financial Times (paywall; via BGR), they have heard that Apple had apparently been pretty close to acquiring actor/director Ron Howard’s TV and film production company.

Dubbed Imagine Entertainment, the talks to acquire the company were so far along that it involved Apple’s top executives, such as Tim Cook and Eddy Cue. However for whatever reason, it seems that the talks eventually fizzled out and it was not stated why, but then again that’s kind of the way things go as not every talk necessarily ends up being successful due to a variety of reasons.

Imagine Entertainment’s TV division has been responsible for some pretty big name shows such as Friday Night Lights and Empire, with their recent efforts coming in the form of 24: Legacy. Whether or not Apple still has plans to acquire a production company remains to be seen, but if this report is true, we wouldn’t be surprised if Apple were to try again.
