Weather apps are a dime a dozen and for the most part, the default weather app that comes installed on our phones is more than capable of getting the job done and then some. Sure, there are more complicated and complex apps out there, but if you just want to know if today is an umbrella or jacket kind of day, the default app should be fine.

That being said, it seems that IBM has decided to try their hand at creating a weather app of their own. The app was put together by The Weather Company, and what makes this particular weather app so different from the rest of other weather apps is that it can function and send emergency alerts to users even if they aren’t connected on a network.

This is thanks to the use of mesh network technology and is aimed primarily at emerging markets where sometimes network coverage isn’t quite as ideal. Thanks to peer-to-peer connectivity, users who aren’t connected to networks will still be able to receive alerts, which might be important if there are emergency warnings.

Unfortunately for now it seems that the app is aimed more towards users in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, so for those who aren’t in those regions, we guess you’ll have to look elsewhere, although that won’t be too hard given how much we are spoilt for choice.
