There are countless methods to cool down internal PC components that tend to run a bit hot when they’re being pushed to peak performance. Liquid cooling is often mentioned as one of the best ways to ensure that the components stay within their temperature ranges even under heavy load. Simple fans can suffice in most cases as well but all of these solutions require moving parts and power sources. Passive cooling doesn’t require any of this which also means that it’s silent.
Passive cooling is achieved by combining multiple heat fins together to dissipate the heat effectively. It’s easier said than done, though, because for passive cooling to work you need to have a component that doesn’t run too hot.
NVIDIA presented such a GPU with the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, an entry-level model from its 10xx series. A company called Palit Microsystems has modified this NVIDIA graphics card with a “vast volume” of nickel-plated fins to deliver what is one of the most silent graphics cards you can find on the market right now.
Palit’s 1050 Ti KalmX card does a good job of providing a silent GPU, but bear in mind that you’ll need to do something about all of the heat that these fins will dissipate, so you’ll need fans in your PC anyway unless you’re going for a more elaborate setup.
Palit hasn’t confirmed how much this graphics card is going to cost and when it’s going to be released but since reviews have started to surface online it’s only a matter of time before this bit of information is made public.
