Xiaomi became an instant success story in just a couple of years after it emerged on the scene in China. However, despite its monumental rise in its early years, the company’s performance in the smartphone market is struggling now that its rivals are catching up. It recently went down to fourth place in the Chinese smartphone market after it was overtaken by Oppo and Vivo so the company has to pull something out of its hat. According to a new report, Xiaomi will try to maintain sales momentum by focusing more on premium smartphones this year.

Digitimes reports that Xiaomi continues to experience slow growth for its smartphone business and that it expects the trend to continue in the first quarter of this year because the sales of its handsets are below expectations.

The company is reportedly thinking about ways to enhance its competitiveness in the market and appears to have decided to come out with more mid and high-end smartphones in its 2017 lineup. It remains to be seen how these new premium smartphones will be different than the ones that the company already offers and if they will provide any features that will truly set them apart from the competition.

Xiaomi is also due to launch smartphones later this year that will be powered by its very own Pinecone processor.
