We had been hearing reports that perhaps Apple is going to unveil a new iPad this week and it has done that today by simply sending out a press release. The new tablet replaces the iPad Air 2. It has a 9.7 inch display and is simply called the iPad.

Even though it’s a new tablet, the specifications are more or less similar to those of the iPad Air 2. The biggest change is that it packs the 64-bit A9 processor which first arrived with the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.

Apple has also sliced the price a bit to make it a more compelling option for customers who are looking to purchase a new tablet. The base 32GB Wi-Fi only model costs $329 while the Wi-Fi and Cellular model with 32GB storage costs $459.

The design is similar to that of the iPad Air 2 even though the case is slightly larger. If you are interested in picking one up, bear in mind that this tablet can’t be purchased in Rose Gold, that’s a color option that Apple has reserved for the iPad Pro only.

Speaking of the iPad Pro, Apple is expected to launch three new iPad Pro models at some point this year so keep your fingers crossed for those tablets as they will have more to offer than the new iPad.
