Our smartphones these days are so powerful that they make computers from a decade ago feel downright ancient and out of date. However could our smartphones be powerful enough to be on par with laptops? Perhaps, and if that day comes, it seems that Apple could be toying with the idea of a laptop powered by a smartphone.

In a recently discovered patent, it seems that Apple has come up with an idea of how a smartphone could be used to power a laptop. As you can see in the drawing above, Apple suggests that a smartphone, such as the iPhone, be used to dock inside a slot on the laptop in which not only would it power the device, but it will also double up as a trackpad for the computer as well.

The patent also talks about how tablets could also power laptops, and where instead of a screen would be, users would insert their tablets in which the tablet’s screen would double as the laptop’s display. This isn’t exactly a new concept as we have seen other companies come up with similar ideas in the past, although safe to say that so far none of these inventions have had the impact that they were hoping for.

In any case as with all patents, it’s hard to say if and when Apple will make it a reality, but what do you guys think? Is this a concept you’d like to see become a reality some day?
