It was confirmed earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 that the Huawei Mate 9 is going to be the first non-Amazon device to have support for the company’s Alexa virtual assistant. Alexa wasn’t present on the phone when it was shipped in the United States but Huawei did say that the feature would be added through a software update later. That promised update is rolling out now.

An over-the-air update is out now for the Huawei Mate 9 in the United States. It’s going to bring the Huawei Alexa app to Mate 9 users in the country.

“With the new Huawei Alexa app, we add intelligent voice control to the rich features already available on Mate 9. We look forward to collaborating with Amazon to further develop more voice-activated mobile experiences,” said Zhendong Zhu, president, Huawei Device USA.

The app will allow Huawei Mate 9 users to tap into the power of Amazon Alexa. It’s a voice-driven experience that has been designed with the assumption that users are not looking at a screen. Users can control their smart home devices with just voice commands, stream music, get the latest news, shop, and do much more.

Alexa has support for more than 10,000 skills so there’s a wide variety of functions that it can perform on the user’s command. The list of skills will continue to grow over time and Alexa will become even more useful in the days to come.
