If you’re looking for speakers for your living room, but you’re not really a fan of the standing speaker setup or bookshelf speakers, then you’ll be pleased to learn that the folks at Sonos have officially announced the Playbase. This is the company’s latest speaker offering where as its name suggests, it will sit at the base of your TV.

As you can see in the photo above, the Playbase can be placed underneath your TV where it will sit there and be all inconspicuous, assuming that’s the kind of look you are going for. It will support TVs that weigh up to 75 pounds and measures 2.28 x 28.35 x 14.17 inches, making it one of the thinnest speakers that Sonos has launched to date.

The speakers will feature ten class-D digital amps as well as six midrange and three tweeters, and one woofer, all of which are stuffed into the rather slim package. Of course we expect that it would be hard to compete with more dedicated woofers or larger speakers, but this is clearly aimed at users who want something minimalistic and simple, although if you wanted the speakers can also wirelessly connect to a Sonos Sub or two Sonos Play:1 speakers that will help create a 5.1 surround sound experience.

If these sound like speakers you’re interested in, the Sonos Playbase will be going on sale come 4th of April.
