In terms of who outsold whom, it has been a bit back and forth between Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PS4 console, where the latter seems to be the one leading most of the time, although in recent times Microsoft’s Xbox One console has been doing pretty well for itself. However with the upcoming launch of Project Scorpio, it is believed that Microsoft could take the lead.

Speaking with Games Industry, NPD’s Mat Piscatella believes that the excitement surrounding Scorpio could result in the Xbox One outselling the PS4 in the US market this year. According to Piscatella, “I remain bullish on the Scorpio in the US market, particularly in the launch year. I think Scorpio has the potential to push Xbox One sales ahead of the PS4 in the US in 2017. Adoption among the core gaming audience could be significant. And, while this is a niche audience to target, it’s the niche which is necessary to put the Scorpio on the path for longer term mass market adoption.”

Just last week the official specs of Project Scorpio was revealed and not only does the console outperform the current-gen Xbox One (obviously) at least on paper, it also seems to be more powerful compared to the PS4. This should appease Xbox gamers who have in the early days of the PS4 and Xbox One had to contend with the Xbox One typically running games at slightly lower frame rates or resolution compared to the PS4, although whether or not at the end of the day it will help Microsoft outsell Sony in the US remains to be seen.
