We have been hearing quite a few rumors regarding Samsung’s plans for foldable phones. It is no secret that the company is working on displays that can actually be bent and folded, and we have heard rumors that they are planning for a possible launch later this year. However Samsung Display has since poured cold water onto that possibility

In a report from The Korea Herald, it quotes Samsung Display’s principal engineer Kim Tae-woong who said that displays that are foldable will most likely mature in 2019, hinting that we might have to wait a couple more years until we get ourselves a device that sports a truly foldable and not flexible display.

Speaking at the Display TechSalon in Seoul, South Korea, Kim was quoted as saying, “Because the bezel-free display currently sells well, we still have enough time to develop foldable display. The technology is expected to be mature around 2019.” He also adds that there are some challenges that need to be overcome before foldable smartphone displays can ship in a retail product.

It is possible that maybe Samsung could launch a phone with a pseudo-foldable display, or maybe part of the phone’s display can be folded, but judging by Kim’s comments, we might have to wait a bit.
