How tough is the Samsung Galaxy S8? According to a recent video uploaded by YouTuber JerryRigEverything, it shows that the phone appears to be able to withstand some forms of torture, such as bending, fire, and scratches. Sounds good, right? However if you drop your phone onto a hard surface like concrete, that’s a completely different story.

The folks at SquareTrade have decided to put the phone through its paces via a breakability test, and boy it did not fare well. To be fair, Samsung did not design the Galaxy S8 to be rugged in the first place (that’s where the Active version comes in), and the phone was clearly designed with aesthetics in mind where the phone is pretty much covered in glass all over, edge its sides.

This is why it did not really come as a surprise to find that the phone did not fare well when dropped onto hard surfaces. In the drop test where the phone was dropped at various angles from a height of 6 feet, it seems that the first drop was enough to result in cracks and loose glass. Dropping it on its back resulted in spiderwebbing and cracks, and a tumble test did not see the phone fare any better.

What’s the takeaway from all of this? Basically you’ll want to be careful with the phone when you’re out and about. Also invested in a rugged case or a screen protector might not be the worst idea either.
