When Google unveiled its Daydream virtual reality platform last year, it said that flagship smartphones from other companies will have support for its virtual reality platform. However, only a handful of devices ever really supported it over the past year. The company today confirmed at the I/O 2017 developers conference that one of the hottest flagship smartphones of this year will soon receive Daydream support.

Google has confirmed today that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will receive support for the Daydream platform this summer through a software update which will be released over-the-air.

The company is delighted that Samsung has decided to enable the Galaxy S8 to work with Daydream even though it’s running its own competing virtual reality platform with the Gear VR.

What this means is that after a software update comes out in the next few weeks, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners will be able to use the handsets with Google’s Daydream View virtual reality headsets. They can then experience all VR experiences that are available on the Daydream platform.

Google also confirmed at I/O 2017 today that LG’s next flagship smartphone is going to have support for Daydream too. It didn’t say anything about the smartphone itself since LG hasn’t said anything so far, but it’s likely going to be the V30 that’s due in the third quarter of this year.
