Several years ago, there were rumors that Microsoft could have a smaller Surface tablet in the works called the Surface Mini. This was roughly around the time that smaller sized tablets like the iPad mini were gaining quite a bit of traction, so it wasn’t surprising that Microsoft wanted in on the action too.

However a year later ahead of the Surface Pro 3’s launch, the tablet was reportedly cancelled at the very last minute. At that time it was reported that Microsoft’s newly-appointed CEO Satya Nadella did not believe that the tablet was different enough to compete with the competition, and now thanks to a report from Windows Central, we now know what the tablet looks like.

The publication has managed to get their hands on what is allegedly the Surface Mini. From what we can tell from its design, it seems that the tablet looks more like a larger Windows Phone handset rather than a Surface tablet. The report claims that the tablet has a soft and felt-like texture covering it, and it also features a built-in kickstand, along with support for microSD cards, a micro-USB port for charging, as well as a USB-OTG port.

As for specs, the tablet is said to sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset with 1GB of RAM, an 8-inch 1440×1080 display, and 32GB of storage. Note that the specs do sound outdated by today’s standards, but back then it was considered to be pretty good. We’re not sure if Microsoft ever plans on revisiting the mini tablet market, but for now this is what things could have been.
