You will soon be able to control your 4K HDR Sony TV with an Amazon Echo. Sony has announced today that a new firmware update is going to be released later this month which will bring Amazon Echo compatibility to select TV models. The press release states that users with an Amazon Echo, Echo Show, and Echo Dot will be able to control the TVs. This suggests that perhaps this functionality may not be available on other Alexa-enabled devices.

The full list of supported TV models is available on Sony’s website. Sony has added support for the aforementioned Amazon devices to 23 different TV models from 2017 as well as select models from last year.

All of them are powered by Android TV. The company has also confirmed that this functionality is only being offered to users in the United States right now.

So what will owners of these TV models be able to get done using just voice commands given to Alexa? The functionality is going to be limited initially.

They will be able to power the TV on and off, change the channel by name or number, control the input and volume as well as access controls for streaming and DVR content.

The functionality pretty much covers the basis. For all advanced settings stuff, users will have to rely on the remote control that shipped with their 4K HDR Sony TV.

Sony hasn’t confirmed precisely when this firmware update is going to be released but it does say that the update will be out in July.
