When one writes and records a music album, it’s usually a process that might take weeks, months, or even a year. However in the case of Grammy-award-winning singer-songwriter and jazz bassist Esperanza Spalding, she is planning something else entirely, and that is in the span of 77 hours, she plans to write and record her new album entirely on Facebook Live.

For those unfamiliar, Facebook Live is a tool by Facebook that allows users to stream live videos. For her to record her entire album while livestreaming the process is a very different approach, albeit an exciting one, especially for those who might not be familiar with the writing and recording process.

According to Spalding, “Having such limited time to write and record 10 songs will also force us to rely on improvisation and first instinct. Not allowing us time to judge, second guess, question, or alter the initial hits of inspiration that drive the creation of each song. That means that the audience will get a record of the most potent, charged, fresh-from-the ethers-compositional, musical and lyrical content.”

We suppose it makes sense given that jazz does focus a lot on improvisation, and given Spalding’s career, she does look like she has the experience and knowledge to pull something like this off. Of course whether or not it will result in something good remains to be seen, but at the very least we suppose it is rather novel.
