For the longest time ever, a lot of our devices were wired. Keyboards and mice were wired, headphones were wired, speakers were wired, charging cables were wired, but nowadays we’re starting to see more wireless options. However there are still some purists who believe that wired usually offers up better performance.

This is why many audiophiles tend to prefer wired speakers/headphones versus wireless when possible, but that’s something that Qualcomm is trying to address with its aptX codec. Unfortunately it seems that if you’re a Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P user, it looks like you’ll be out of luck if you’re hoping for aptX support.

A user posted onto the Google Issue Tracker about how aptX was not supported on his Nexus 6P, which presumably he thought was a bug or a missing feature. However Google replied by saying that it was intentional. “Unfortunately support for aptX and aptX HD are not supported on Nexus 6p and Nexus 5X – only on newer devices.”

For those unfamiliar, aptX is a codec that supposedly offers higher quality audio when transmitting over Bluetooth. Whether or not you think you can tell the differences between a wired or wireless connection boils down to the individual, but if you’re someone who can’t tell the difference, then we guess this probably isn’t that big of an issue.
