Sony’s PS4 Pro was only recently launched, but it seems that the talk about the PlayStation 5 has already begun. Speaking to GamingBolt, analyst Michael Pachter has suggested that the PS5 could be launched as soon as 2019, and that the console will be a “half step” upgrade, similar to how the PS4 Pro was considered a “half step” over the PS4.According to Pachter, “My expectation that is that it’s not coming out in 2018. That [it will be] 2019 or 2020 but probably 2019. Sony is probably timing it better because they are going to bring out a 4K-capable device when the 4K TV market reaches 50% in the USA and 35% in the rest of the world. I think Sony has probably got the next console cycle nailed down already. I think they already know what they got to do.”
Pachter’s estimate is different from an earlier report in which another analyst, Damian Thong of Macquarie Capital Securities offered his own estimation that the PS5 could be launched in 2018, which is next year. Next year would seem a bit hasty, but then again the Xbox One X is supposedly considerably more powerful than the PS4 Pro.
For Sony to allow Microsoft to have a year’s lead on them doesn’t seem to make sense, but we guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime does 2019 still feel a bit too soon for you in terms of upgrades?
