One of the ways that Valve manages to get the prize pool of its The International DotA 2 tournament so high is through player contributions. Fans and players of the game can donate towards the overall prize pool, and at the same time they will be rewarded with certain items in game, thus making it feel a bit more worth it.This is something that Blizzard is attempting to do with the StarCraft 2 eSports scene and back at BlizzCon 2016, the company announced the War Chest initiative. That being said, it seems that the War Chest feature is expected to go live later this week, where players can contribute money that will go towards supporting StarCraft 2 eSports.
According to Blizzard, “Each War Chest begins with a single unit skin and an exclusive portrait. Additional skins are divided into three phases, and can be unlocked by playing Multiplayer or Co-op matches during or after the corresponding phase, until by the end of the challenge you have a full set. Your initial purchase also grants awesome rewards in other Blizzard titles.”
Gamers who are interested can purchase individual race passes for $9.99 each, or if they’re so inclined they can purchase the entire collection for $24.99. Details about what the War Chest has to offer can be found on the StarCraft 2 website.
