With the launch of HomeKit, it is clear that Apple is interested in linking up our smart devices at home to help create an automated living experience, where we can control things like our coffee machines, thermostats, locks, and more automatically. We’ve also seen Apple expand their automated efforts in self-driving car technology, but that’s not all the company is focused on.

During an earnings call with investors, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook spoke about the company’s AI efforts and how it will go beyond just self-driving cars. According to Cook, “[Autonomous] systems can be used in a variety of ways. A vehicle is only one, but there are many different areas of it. And I don’t want to go any further with that.”

He goes on to add, “We are very focused on autonomous systems. We do have a large project going, and are making a big investment in this. From our point of view, autonomy is sort of the mother of all AI projects.” Exactly what this “large project” is remains to be seen, but like we said Apple has been pushing to make HomeKit more mainstream, not to mention the launch of HomePod which will sort of act as a voice-controlled hub for iOS devices, but we suppose this is something we’ll just have to wait and see.
