Continuing with its mission to become the go-to online destination for people who not only want to see what’s up with their friends and family but what’s up in the world as well, Facebook today started rolling out a new Trending News section on mobile. The Trending News section gets its very own link in the mobile app’s main navigation. The new section is being rolled out to users in the United States on both iOS and Android.

This latest move is part of Facebook’s redesign of its Trending Topics section. As the name suggests, this section highlights news stories that are getting significant traction on the world’s largest social network.

The redesign makes it easier for users to see how other publications are covering a particular topic. It also shows what a user’s friends and the public figures that they follow are saying about that matter.

The publications that feature in this section are sorted by engagement around the article and the publisher in general on Facebook. The social network’s algorithm also weighs what other articles are linking to that particular article.

The redesign is rolling out to users on iPhone and Android in the U.S. starting today. The navigational link for Trending News was released for iPhone users over the past few weeks. Facebook is testing it on Android currently and will roll it out for users on that platform in the near future.
