If there is one feature you might notice on many cameras, especially those of the compact variety, is that there are scene selector modes where users can change it depending on the photo they’re trying to take, such as landscape, at night, a portrait, sports/action, and so on, and it seems that these are features we can expect in the iPhone 8’s camera.

It seems that Apple’s HomePod firmware is giving away a lot more than what Apple might have intended, because in a tweet by developer Guilherme Rambo (via 9to5Mac), it mentions a potential feature called “SmartCam”. Apparently this feature will be able to tune the iPhone 8’s camera settings depending on the scene at hand, with references being made to Baby, Bright Stage, Document, Fireworks, Foliage, and more.

In a way it reminds us of white balance settings, which can also be adjusted depending on the lighting of the scene, and exactly how this differs from that remains to be seen. Perhaps the feature will help to enhance certain types of scenes, like maybe make sunsets more saturated, or document photos brighter, but we guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Apple is expected to officially announce the iPhone next month. No official invites have been sent out but assuming Apple keeps to schedule, that’s when we can probably expect it. Apple’s CEO has also hinted at a September launch in which the company has forecasted a strong quarter.
