The HTC Vive is one of the best tethered VR headsets on the market right now. The company also confirmed earlier this year that it’s working on a standalone VR headset which wouldn’t need to be tethered to a PC. HTC hasn’t revealed much information about this product so far. It hasn’t even said what the headset will be called. However, it seems that the standalone HTC VR headset name has been discovered courtesy of a filing the company has recently made.
HTC has filed a trademark application in the United States and Europe requesting exclusive use of “Vive Focus.” It can reasonably be expected that this filing has been made for the company’s standalone VR headset.
It’s already known that HTC’s standalone headset is going to be based on Qualcomm’s VRDK reference device which was unveiled at Google I/O earlier this year. The reference design highlighted the device’s integrated eye-tracking functionality so it’s likely to be featured in HTC’s headset as well.
The trademark applications were filed with the relevant authorities in the United States and Europe earlier this month. HTC hasn’t confirmed or denied as yet if the Vive Focus is indeed meant for its much-awaited standalone virtual reality headset.
No word as yet from HTC about when it’s going to unveil its standalone virtual reality headset. Google did say at I/O that these standalone headsets will be out later this year.
