The new iPhones that Apple is selling this year are the most expensive smartphones that the company has ever sold. Some might have been under the impression that Apple would have instructed its store clerks to try and upsell customers who come in for an iPhone 8 to the iPhone X. That’s not going to be the case, though. Apple’s retail boss Angela Ahrendts has revealed that clerks have been instructed to not upsell customers on the iPhone X.

Prices for the iPhone X start at $999. That alone puts the handset out of the reach of many customers.

The 256GB iPhone X costs $1,149, that’s more than what a customer would pay for some models of the iMac and MacBook Air. Naturally, there are also going to be a lot of people who just can’t justify to themselves buying a smartphone for $1,000.

At least now they know that when they walk into an Apple Store to purchase an iPhone 8 that starts at $699, they won’t be badgered by a store clerk who just wants to sell a $999 smartphone.

“Internally we said the tagline was ‘an iPhone for everyone,'” Ahrendts said, adding that clerks would rather ask customers who they’re buying an iPhone for and what does the recipient need from their smartphone. It’s something that the company already does with the Mac and iPad, “why wouldn’t we do that with [the] phone?,” Ahrendts added.

Pre-orders for the iPhone X will be opened on October 27th.
