So what makes a television program or a movie successful? Or rather how do studios determine whether or not a brand new movie or TV show idea is worth investing in? There are many factors that are taken into consideration, but it seems over at the BBC, they are looking to use AI to help improve on their programming.

This new initiative announced by BBC Research and Development will be undertaken in collaboration with eight UK universities, where they will take advantage of AI to better understand what audiences want, why they want it, and what kind of impact such shows might have on them. It will also help to create a more customized a personalized watching experience.

According to Matthew Postgate, the BBC’s Chief Technology and Product Officer, “The BBC has always been at its best when it combines creativity with technology. As we reinvent the BBC, we can see the opportunities that data and machine learning are opening up for us, our creative talent and our audiences. This partnership will help us break new ground and ensure we continue giving audiences the very best in public service broadcasting well into the future.”

As it stands video platforms like YouTube and Netflix can sort of determine what kind of videos you might enjoy based on things that you have previously watched, so we guess seeing the BBC apply AI to their programming to improve on their content doesn’t really seem like that much of a stretch.
