Motorola has made a Moto Mod that brings the power of Alexa to its Moto Z phones. However, the module costs more than what you can get an actual Echo device for. The Alexa speaker Moto Mod is going to cost $150, which begs the question, why not just buy the $99 Echo?

The new Moto Mod from Motorola is a speaker attachment that comes with Alexa. It’s officially called the Moto Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa. It’s quite similar to the existing Soundboost 2 speaker mod but with the obvious addition of Alexa, Amazon’s virtual private assistant.

The module is complete with a glowing blue LED ring on the back, the kind that you’d normally get on an actual Echo device. The module is essentially an external speaker that has Alexa baked in.

The question is, though, do you really need one? It’s not like the handsets that this module is compatible with don’t already have Google Assistant. Moreover, the price itself is too high. $150 is enough to buy you an Amazon Echo and an Echo Dot speaker.

Only customers that feel that they absolutely need to take Alexa with them wherever they go might be the ones spending $150 on it. Motorola is going to start selling the Moto Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa starting next month. It will be available from Motorola, Amazon, and Best Buy.
