Buying the Nintendo Switch’s Pro Controller isn’t exactly cheap, which is why some gamers have turned to cheaper third-party solutions, and it also explains why some gamers were pretty chuffed when they discovered that in the Nintendo Switch firmware update to version 4.0, support for the GameCube controller was added.

Now Nintendo did not announce the support officially but it was quickly discovered by many gamers and subsequent videos have since been uploaded onto YouTube and other social media platforms. However as it turns out, adding support for the GameCube controller was actually an accident, or at least that’s according to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.

Speaking to Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo, Fils-Aime was quoted as saying, “In our latest system software update, it enables third-party peripherals to work on Nintendo Switch. As a result, the peripheral for Wii U that allows it to attach GameCube controllers also works. I think it’s fair to say, Stephen, that that peripheral working was as much a surprise to us as it was to consumers.”

Fils-Aime was also quick to dismiss the speculation that the support for the GameCube controllers was a sign that there could be announcement to be made regarding Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Switch.
