NVIDIA hasn’t shared any details about this next-generation GPU architecture at this point in time but if a new rumor is to be believed, the company’s new GPU architecture will be called “Ampere.” It’s expected to be unveiled next year at the GPU Technology Conference. The company doesn’t usually announce new GeForce graphics cards at its conference which is why many might be skeptical about this rumor.

According to the rumor, NVIDIA’s next-gen GPU architecture will be called Ampere. No technical details are available at this point in time so it’s difficult to say what improvements it’s going to bring compared to the existing Pascal architecture.

It’s claimed that at least on the GeForce front, NVIDIA will be jumping from Pascal to Ampere. The company might use its Volta GPU architecture for its AI and cloud computing markets. The rumor also claims that NVIDIA’s new Ampere-based graphics cards will succeed the company’s GeForce 10 series which is based on Pascal.

Bear in mind that this is just a rumor and nothing has been confirmed or even teased by NVIDIA regarding Ampere. There has been no mention of Ampere by the company while it has already talked about the Volta GPU architecture in the past.

The situation should clear up a bit after CES 2018. Many will expect some kind of announcement from NVIDIA at the trade show. It remains to be seen whether the company will make one.
