For all intents and purposes, Ben Affleck is the current Batman in the DC Extended Universe. In fact at one point in time he was expected to direct and star in a standalone Batman movie, but that did not happen and a new director was found in Matt Reeves. It was expected that while Affleck might not direct the new movie, that he would at least star in it.

However even then it is not a guarantee, at least according to a recent report from USA Today in which Affleck told the publication that his role in the Batman movie is “something I’m contemplating,” which doesn’t exactly sound like he is 100% on board. He then adds, “You don’t do it forever, so I want to find a graceful and cool way to segue out of it.”

Affleck has only taken up the mantle of Batman twice so far (unless you count his cameo in Suicide Squad): once in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the second time in the upcoming Justice League movie. Prior to this Affleck had said that he would be willing to do a third Batman movie if Warner Bros. wanted it, but his latest comments make it sound like he still isn’t completely committed to the idea.

It is unclear how Warner and DC plan to move forward should Affleck decide that he’s done playing the role of Batman, but we guess we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime it will also probably be a while before we see that Batman movie as production is said to only begin next year.
