Microsoft’s co-founder and former CEO has decided to build a smart city in Arizona. He’s spending $80 million for this purpose. The money will be invested in this planned smart city that’s going to be based outside Phoenix, Arizona. The money will be poured in through a group controlled by Gates’ investment firm Cascade Investment. The smart city is going to be spread on nearly 25,000 acres of land.

When it’s built out, the smart city is going to be comparable in square miles and projection population to Tempe.

The smart city is going to have 3,400 acres of open space and 470 acres will be dedicated for public schools. 3,800 acres will be reserved for industrial, office, and retail space. Some 80,000 homes will be built in this smart city.

The city will be equipped with data centers, high-speed networks, self-driving cars, automatic logistics hub, and new manufacturing technologies. It’s designed to be a city of the future. The idea is to be “transform a raw, blank slate into a purpose-built edge city built around a flexible infrastructure model.”

The idea of building smart cities around technologies of the future is nothing new and it won’t be surprising if more of such developments are launched in the coming years.
