OnePlus unveiled its new flagship smartphone recently, the OnePlus 5T. It comes with several improvements and Face Unlock is one of the new features. It enables users to scan their face to control access to their device. A new report suggests that the OnePlus 5 might also get the Face Unlock feature when its Android 8.0 Oreo update is released in the coming months.

The OnePlus 5T’s Face Unlock feature doesn’t rely on any complex facial recognition sensors like the iPhone X. It justs uses the front-facing camera to control access to the device. So, in theory, if OnePlus wanted to bring this feature to the OnePlus 5, there are no hardware limitations on the device that would prevent it from doing so.

It’s unclear at this point in time when the OnePlus 5 Android 8.0 Oreo update is going to be released. The handset should get it in the coming months.

According to the report, the Oreo update is going to bring several new features for the handset including the picture-in-picture mode, a new camera and gallery interface, and the Face Unlock feature from the OnePlus 5T.

OnePlus has previously said that it’s going to release an Oreo beta for the OnePlus 5 by the end of this month. Whether or not the Face Unlock feature will be present in the first beta remains to be seen.
